Am I the only one with clear memories of anything Christmas-related before Thanksgiving—really before December 1—being mildly shocking? These days, even though Thanksgiving was only two days ago, it seems like the Christmas season has been in full swing for weeks now. But we didn't want to let Thanksgiving weekend go without a little memory and reflection..
When Amy and I were growing up, Thanksgiving meant a trip to our grandparents’ house in Central Florida and a big meal with lots of other folks at the ranch where our grandfather hunted. My grandmother always brought one or two dishes to share, and we feasted on a bounty of turkey, venison, casseroles, and pies that someone else (someone else!) prepared.
Here we are with our grandmother at the ranch on Thanksgiving circa 1977, clearly in our oversized denim jacket era.
For a long time I was genuinely confused by people celebrating Thanksgiving at their own house. Was that legal? Wasn’t it mandatory to eat turkey outside with dozens of people you hardly know? Kind of like the pilgrims?
Nowadays, Thanksgiving looks quite a bit different. There were only nine of us this year, including the cutest baby and two-and-a-half-year-old you could ever hope to meet. We gathered around our own dining room table and did all the work ourselves (ourselves!). It was small and sweet, like many of the multitude of things we have to be grateful for.
I somehow managed to take pics of our table but not the people around it. A prioritoy check may be in order.
One of them is our small but sweet business and the wonderful customers we have the opportunity to serve. Each and every order makes us giddy and oh-so-grateful for the people on the other end of the packages we ship.
So whether you've had your Christmas tree up for weeks now or it will still be a while before you get to it, know that we are grateful for you this Thanksgiving and all through the year!
