So they say anyway.
Last week, Amy and I had a very brief change—of scenery—when we made an overnight trip to College Station, Texas, to attend the live show of our favorite podcast. Sophie Hudson and Melanie Shankle, hosts of the Big Boo Cast, did not disappoint.
We boarded an early morning flight from Pensacola to Houston (a direct flight, thankfully) and were in College Station before lunchtime. We immediately proceeded to the George Bush Library and Museum on the campus of Texas A&M. It also did not disappoint—the library or Texas A&M.
The museum was beautiful and thoughtfully designed to honor a man who devoted his life to service to our country. But because President Bush's humility always deflected attention to truths and causes greater than himself, the exhibits actually honor America, too. We don't want to get too political here, but it left us longing for more of that in our public life today. Much more.
Sigh . . . how about something lighter?
After a quick change, we were off to the main event where our closest pretend friends, Sophie and Melanie, made us laugh for two solid hours. To be clear, they are actual, real-life friends with each other. After listening to them each week for years, they feel like friends to us, but of course they are unaware of our existence. The 21st Century can be weird, right?
We did also see some sweet real-life friends and fellow Big Boo Cast fans. That was a treat.
The trip was very fun, very out of the ordinary for both of us, and very much worth the effort. It's refreshing to see a different place, drive on different roads, do different things, and even sleep in a different bed (which for us was at The George Hotel in College Station, a great place to stay. I'm still thinking about the book wall and the fabulous wallpaper and tile work there.).
So while we came back tired, the quick change was also refreshing. Maybe a change is as good as a rest.
